He was wearing a 3M Powered Air Purifyimg Respirator.  He had not been medically evaluated for his ability to wear a respirator.     He was exposed to respirable dust containing 22% silica at an 8-hour time weighted average of  0.563 miligrams per cubic meter, approximately 1.34 times the limit of 0.42 miligrams per cubic meter.  This limit is established to prevent silicosis disease.  The sample was collected on June 5, 2012 during a 454 minute sampling period.

This limit is established to prevent silicosis disease.  The sample was collected on June 5, 2012 during a 454 minute sampling period.  Exposure calculations include a zero increment for the 26 minutes not sampled.      Feasable engineering controls could include:   1) an evaluation of ventilation and local exhaust systems to ensure capture of silica dust and   2) implementation of a program that ensures operation of exhaust system within it's designed parameters, and  3) implementing a maintenance program for the exhaust system.

29 CFR 1910.1200(h)(1):     Employers shall provide employees with effective information and training on hazardous chemicals in their work area at the time of their initial assignment, and whenever a new chemical hazard the employees have not previously been trained about is introduced into their work area. Information and training may be designed to cover categories of hazards (e.g., flammability, carcinogenicity) or specific chemicals. Employees failed to report vision disturbances such as cloudy and halo vision caused by DMEA ecxposure.
