29 CFR 1910.212(a)(1): Types of guarding. One or more methods of machine guarding shall be provided to protect the operator and other employees in the machine area from hazards such as those created by point of operation, ingoing nip points, rotating parts, flying chips and sparks. Examples of guarding methods are-barrier guards, two-hand tripping devices, electronic safety devices, etc. Employees engaged in manufacturing activities were exposed to amputation hazards in that the following pieces of equipment were not provided guarding: a) Vernon Master Tube Plasma Profiler - the 12" chuck was not guarded b) Universal Iron Worker - The punch portion of the Iron Worker was unguarded c) Little Piranha iron worker - The Punch portion of the iron Worker was unguarded d) Chicago Mechanical Brake Press - The point of operation was not guarded as the brake was single hand controls and foot controlled.
