29 CFR 1926.652(a)(1): Each employee in an excavation was not protected from cave-ins by an adequate protective system designed in accordance with 29 CFR 1926.652(c). a) At the jobsite, employees in the process of replacing 16" chiller pipes were exposed to a cave-in/engulfment hazard while working in an unprotected excavation (6' in depth by 17'2" wide by 17'09" in length). The north and east walls were vertical. The soil was previously disturbed, type "C' soil. No protective system (shoring, shielding sloping) was provided for employee protection, observed on or about about 10/16/12.
