29 CFR 1910.212(a)(1): Types of guarding. One or more methods of machine guarding shall be provided to protect the operator and other employees in the machine area from hazards such as those created by point of operation, ingoing nip points, rotating parts, flying chips and sparks. Examples of guarding methods are-barrier guards, two-hand tripping devices,electronic safety devices, etc. On or about January 31, 2013, on Line 3 in the Slicing Department, an employee opened a plexiglass guard with a magnetic safety interlock device connected to the pick off drum area. The employee was retrieving a blank package that had jammed on the Curwood 618 Packaging Machine and the the interlock device failed allowing the machine's pick drum to continue to rotate and caught the employee's smock and pulled his left forearm into the rotating part of the pick drum.
