29 CFR 1910.36(b)(1): Two exit routes. At least two exit routes were not available in the workplace to permit prompt evacuation of employees and other building occupants during an emergency, except as allowed in paragraph (b)(3) of this section. The exit routes must be located as far away as practical from each other so that if one exit route is blocked by fire or smoke, employees can evacuate using the second exit route. (a) In the Eastern Iowa Airport, in the baggage area, the exit route was located such that employees had to walk past the primary exit door on the north wall to use a secondary exit door on the east wall. If the primary exit was blocked by fire or smoke, employees would not be able to evacuate using the second exit door. This condition created an entrapment hazard for employees.
