29 CFR 1926.651(g)(1)(i): Where oxygen deficiency (atmosphere containing less than 19.5 percent oxygen) or a hazardous atmosphere existed or could reasonably be expected to exist, such as in excavations in landfill areas or excavations in areas where hazardous substances are stored nearby, the atmospheres in the excavation shall be tested before employees enter excavations greater than 4 feet (1.22 m) in depth: a) SW Corner of Project - On or about 12/18/2014, the atmosphere in a 20 ft. deep building excavation was not checked adequately and at all levels for hazardous atmospheres in an area where a gasoline station once stood, where underground storage tanks which had contained gasoline and heating oil were known to be potentially located, and where hot work was being performed. Abatement certification required within 10 days after abatement date. The certification shall include a statement that abatement is complete, date and method of abatement, and states employees and their representatives were informed of this abatement.
