29 CFR 1910.212(a)(1): Types of guarding. One or more methods of machine guarding shall be provided to protect the operator and other employees in the machine area from hazards such as those created by point of operation, ingoing nip points, rotating parts, flying chips and sparks. Examples of guarding methods are-barrier guards, two-hand tripping devices, electronic safety devices, etc. a. On or before March 16, 2015, the rotary valve on the regrind system of line 10 was not guarded, resulting in the amputation of an employee's 1st and 2nd finger of his right hand. b. On or before March 31, 2015, the section above the guide wheels of the production band saw was not fully guarded exposing employees to approximately 1 inch of the exposed blade. c. On or before March 31, 2015, the section under the table of the production band saw was not fully guarded exposing employees to approximately 1.25 inch of the exposed blade.
