29 CFR 1910.132(a): Protective equipment was not used when necessary whenever hazards capable of causing injury and impairment were encountered: a)The Chemours Company, Caustic Tank Pad Area - On or about 7/31/15, the employer did not perform an appropriate hazard assessment to determine what hazards employees would be exposed to while applying a chemical resistant coating to the floor and walls of the Caustic Tank Pad Area. Employees were exposed to liquid sodium hydroxide solution 30-54% and the assessment performed by the employer identified required full body protection as a Nomex (flame resistant), not a rain suit or other fluid resistant material. An employee sustained third degree chemical burns to their shins which required skin grafts. ABATEMENT CERTIFICATION REQUIRED

29 CFR 1910.132(d)(1)(i): When the employer had assessed the workplace hazard(s) and determined that hazard(s) were present, the employer did not select the type of personal protective equipment that would protect the affected employee form a liquid caustic material: a) The Chemours Company, Caustic Tank Pad Area - On or about 7/31/15, the employer did not perform an appropriate hazard assessment to determine what hazards employees would be exposed to while applying a chemical resistant coating to the floor and walls of the Caustic Tank Pad Area. Employees used Nomex (flame retardant) suits, not fluid resistant suits, to protect them from liquid sodium hydroxide. ABATEMENT CERTIFICATION REQUIRED
