29 CFR 1926.652(e)(2)(i): Excavation of material to a level no greater than 2 feet (.61m) below the bottom of the members of the support system was allowed when there were indications while the trench was open of a possible loss of soil from behind or below the bottom of the support system: On or about July 21, 2016, at an excavation site, employees were observed working in an approximately 14 foot deep trench with the bottom of protective system elevated approximately 5 feet above the trench floor. The employees were exposed to struck by and crushing hazards.
