29 CFR 1910.217(c)(3)(viii)(c): The safety distance (D(m)) between each two hand trip device and the point of operation was not greater than the distance determined by the following formula: D(m) = 63 inches/second X T(m); where: D(m) = minimum safety distance (inches); 63 inches/second=hand speed constant; and T(m) = the maximum time the press takes for the die closure after it has been tripped (seconds). (a) Single Stroke Press Department: The Press Rite, HAVIR Manufacturing, mechanical power press had two hand trip levers which were 16 and 15 inches away from the point of operation, where the safety distance was less than that of the above formula, which was determined to be 20 inches. (b) Single Stroke Press Department: Mechanical power press number 2 had two hand trip levers which were 5 and 6 inches away from the point of operation, where the safety distance was less than that of the above formula, which was determined to be 11.8 inches. (c) Single Stroke Press Department: The Standard Machinery Co. No. 3T, mechanical power press number 3, had two hand trip levers which were 5 and 5.5 inches away from the point of operation, where the safety distance was less than that of the above formula, which was determined to be 8.9 inches. (d) Single Stroke Press Department: The Standard Machinery Co. No. 3T, mechanical power press Number 4, had two hand trip levers which were 5 and 6 inches away from the point of operation, where the safety distance was less than that of the above formula, which was determined to be 8.9 inches.
