29 CFR 1910.212(a)(1): Types of guarding. One or more methods of machine guarding shall be provided to protect the operator and other employees in the machine area from hazards such as those created by point of operation, ingoing nip points, rotating parts, flying chips and sparks. Examples of guarding methods are-barrier guards, two-hand tripping devices,electronic safety devices, etc. (a) Jewel Food Store #3310, 1501 E. Algonquin Rd., Algonquin, IL, meat market, BIRO table-top service meat grinder model no. 922, serial no. C9866204: on or about June 8, 2017, an employee was assigned to perform regular meat grinding tasks using the subject equipment while its magnetic safety interlock switch was defeated with another magnet that allowed for normal operation without the required tray assembly (safeguard). The employee had his fingers exposed a caught-in hazard from the rotating horizontal screw auger (grinding worm point-of-operation) that resulted in serious finger avulsion and crushing injuries while hand-feeding meat into the grinding bowl (danger zone). (b) Jewel Food Store #3310, 1501 E. Algonquin Rd., Algonquin, IL, meat market, BIRO table-top service meat grinder model no. 922, serial no. C9866204: on or about July 13, 2017, employees were assigned to perform regular meat grinding tasks on the subject equipment while its magnetic safety interlock switch defeated with another magnet that allowed for normal operation without the required tray assembly (safeguard). Employees had their fingers exposed to a caught-in hazard from the rotating horizontal screw auger (grinding worm point-of-operation) likely to result in serious injury when hand-feeding meat into the grinding bowl (danger zone). Abatement documentation is required for these items in accordance with the requirements of 29 CFR 1903.19(d).
