29 CFR 1910.212(a)(1): Types of guarding. One or more methods of machine guarding shall be provided to protect the operator and other employees in the machine area from hazards such as those created by point of operation, ingoing nip points, rotating parts, flying chips and sparks. Examples of guarding methods are-barrier guards, two-hand tripping devices,electronic safety devices, etc. a. On or about August 11, 2017, at the work site located at 15952 State Route 56 East, Laurelville, Ohio, employees used a Brewer saw system to cut lumber into pallet slats and supports. The Brewer saw had unguarded ingoing nip points where a chain driving the rollers began at the saw cage exit and at the end of the conveyor, exposing employees to a caught-in hazard. b. On or about August 11, 2017, at the work site located at 15952 State Route 56 East, Laurelville, Ohio, employees used a Hazlethorn Notcher to create supports for pallet slats. The Hazlethorn Notcher had exposed point of operation hazards at the operator's loading station, exposing the operator to saw blades.

29 CFR 1910.219(c)(4)(i): Projecting shaft ends shall present a smooth edge and end and shall not project more than one-half the diameter of the shaft unless guarded by nonrotating caps or safety sleeves. a. On or about August 11, 2017, at the work site located at 15952 State Route 56 East, Laurelville, Ohio, employees used a Rojo Chop Saw to cut lumber into pallet slats and supports. The Rojo chop saw had exposed, protruding, rotating parts on four rollers to the right of the operator's station that were unguarded, exposing employees to a caught-in hazard.
