General-duty citation text
29 CFR 1910.179(n)(3)(iv): Cranes were used for side pulls that were not specifically authorized by a responsible person who has determined that the stability of the crane is not thereby endangered and that various parts of the crane will not be overstressed: On or about 3/5/2018 employees engaged in welding operations and material handling activities at the Tooling Shop area were exposed to struck-by hazards in that the crane used for the Proof Load Fissure Test Project was not designed for such use. The Lift Systems 2033 SCT Gantry Crane was positioned in a manner that resulted in a side pull when the hoist was not operated vertically. The Gantry Crane lifted up the heavy metal part, then rotated to the side of the part. The hoist was not vertical to the load but to the side causing the load to swing over and side load the crane. 29 CFR 1903.19(d)(1) requires certification and documentation that the abatement of the above violation is complete.
