29 CFR 1910.212(a)(1): Types of guarding. One or more methods of machine guarding shall be provided to protect the operator and other employees in the machine area from hazards such as those created by point of operation, ingoing nip points, rotating parts, flying chips and sparks. Examples of guarding methods are-barrier guards, two-hand tripping devices,electronic safety devices, etc. (a) Northwest, print shop, Komori L628 Lithrone 26-28, 6-color offset printing press: on or about July 16, 2019, operators had their fingers and hands exposed to rotating rollers' in-going nip-points hazards when reaching under a lifted bottom section of the guard during normal production to turn wing nut valve for adjusting coater's flow into the pan. (b) Northeast, print shop, Harris Graphics saddle stitcher, 3-knives transport section: on or about July 23, 2019, an operator had his fingers and hands exposed to running belts and pulleys pinch point hazards because the grated cover's safety micro switch was disabled for detecting opened cover during normal production. (c) Northeast, print shop, Harris Graphics saddle stitcher, 3-knives delivery table: on or about July 23, 2019, an operator had his fingers and hands exposed to moving parts caught-in hazard because the sliding grated cover did not prevent side access to the knife's point-of-operation and associated danger zone. Abatement documentation is required for this item in accordance with the requirements of 29 CFR 1903.19(d).
