Compressed air shall not be used for cleaning purposes except where reduced to less than 30 p.s.i. and then only with effective chip guarding and personal protective equipment. a. On or about February 5, 2021, employees were using compressed air to clean equipment and electrical cabinets from dust and debris. Hand held blow guns were operating at approximately 100 p.s.i. without approved nozzle tips, thereby exposing employees to a struck by hazard.

On or about February 5, 2021, two 480 Volt electrical control cabinet doors were not closed while the cabinets were energized, thereby exposing employees to an electrical shock and arc flash/blast hazard while working at the stacker and conveyor line.

29 CFR 1910.333(a)(1): Live parts to which an employee may be exposed shall be deenergized before the employee works on or near them, unless the employer can demonstrate that deenergizing introduces additional or increased hazards or is infeasible due to equipment design or operational limitations. Live parts that operate at less than 50 volts to ground need not be deenergized if there will be no increased exposure to electrical burns or to explosion due to electric arcs. a. On or about February 5, 2021, an employee opened the door to an energized 480 volt electrical cabinet to blow out the cabinet with compressed air. The employer did not ensure that electrical safe work practices were employed by having the electrical panel de-energized, thereby exposing the employee to an electrical shock and arc flash/blast hazard.
