29 CFR 1910.212(a)(1):One or more methods of machine guarding was not provided to protect the operator and other employees in the machine area from hazards such as those created by point of operation, ingoing nip points, rotating parts, flying chips and sparks: (a)Smithfield Packaged Meats Corp. at 1400 North Weber Avenue in Sioux Falls, SD 57103: On or about and at times prior to September 30, 2023, the employer did not ensure movable guarding on the 8th floor East Saddle Table prevented employee exposure to caught-by and pinch point hazards created by movement of the East Saddle Table Conveyor system. A gap between the top of the abutted elevated work platform and the bottom of the movable guard did not reduce or eliminate employee reaching through distance to be less than the distance to contact moving components of the East Saddle Table Conveyor System. This condition exposed employees to caught-in and pinch point hazards. (a)Smithfield Packaged Meats Corp. at 1400 North Weber Avenue, Sioux Falls, SD 57103: On or about and prior to September 30, 2023, the employer did not ensure that movable guarding on the Southeast side of the East and Middle Saddle tables were affixed to the machine or secured elsewhere to prevent deflection and displacement of the guard that could exposure employee to pinch-point and caught-in hazards created by movement of the East Saddle Table conveyor system. This condition exposed employees to pinch-point and caught-in hazards.
