Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to amputation or crushing hazard from inadvertent activation of the shear: a) The foot treadle on the Bateman Iron Worker (Serial Number 4202-D in the Sheet Metal Shop was not protected so as to prevent accidental actuation by falling or moving objects or by employees accidentally stepping on the treadle, March 11, 1986. Among other methods some feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct this hazard are: 1) Install a barrier guard over the foot treadle. 2) Install treadle locking device. 3) Install point of operation guarding.
