A rig was running in a hole with 2-3/8 drill string. The crew was utilizing the swivel to make up connections, and had modified the grabbing arm on the laydown machine utilizing dies on the grabbing arm. The drill string was not large enough for the grabbing arm to bite down on. The crew then used a third die so that the grabbing arm would bite down. The injured employee saw the third die slipping out of place and went to adjust it. His finger was caught between the pipe in the trough and the die on the grabbing arm resulting in amputation.
