An employee was cutting boards near the edge of the first floor of an apartment building that had lost its roof, and many of its walls, to a fire. He stepped onto a ladder and it toppled over the side of the building and he fell with the ladder. He suffered fractures to a lower-back vertebra and both heels.

As the farmer began to lower the stirring machine from the top, one of the ropes broke, causing the stirring machine to strike the ladder and knock it out from under the employee. The employee fell to the base of the grain bin and sustained fractures requiring hospitalization.
