Big B Crane

A crew was disassembling a mobile crawler crane to relocate it to another worksite. An employee was removing a safety chain retainer in preparation for removing counterweights. The safety chain runs vertically through the center of the counterweights to secure them. The crew had attached an assist crane to the upper end of the securing chain to facilitate removal. The employee was removing the puck that secures the lower end of the chain when the crane hoisted the chain. The employee's right index finger was pinched between the puck and the counterweight, resulting in a partial fingertip amputation.
