I was closing a patients ' incision after I tied the first knot to secure the suture to the tissue I slid the suture through my thumb and forefinger. As I neared the end of the suture the weight of the needle and the twists in the suture caused the needle to spin into my thumb perforating both of my gloves and puncturing my thumb. When I felt the perforation I immediately stepped away from the field while holding onto the contaminated needle suture and needle driver. I placed the contaminated suture and instruments on an unsterile mayo stand removed my gloves to check for perforations. When I saw that there was a perforation I called for another person to finish closing the patient and finish the case. I then informed our management that I was going to get a blood draw for a contaminated needle stick.
