Before the incident
I was administering medications to a recently admitted newborn patient. I administered a [REDACTED] b [REDACTED] engaged the safety and then set the needle aside. I then administered the [REDACTED]amin k [REDACTED] engaged the safety and set it aside. After administering all medications I cleaned up my work space by throwing away packaging and alcohol swabs. I then picked up the [REDACTED] b and [REDACTED] k needles to place them in the sharps container. I felt a sharp poke on my right index finger. I realized the [REDACTED]amin k safety mechanism was crooked and when engaged did not fully cover the needle. I corrected it and placed the needles in the sharps container. I then removed my gloves to see a small poke site on my right index finger. I washed my hands with soap and water and notified the house supervisor for further instructions in an effort to follow the proper protocol.
