The crew had just finished a break and was using a 20-ton spreader bar with (4) 1.5” x 1.5” rectangular stirrup hooks attached. The crew was in the process of loading a pile of scrap plates onto a truck. This pile of scrap was in location 35 of shipping. The scrap pile was the 3rd lift down. The crew was placing 1.5” x 1.5” rectangular hooks with 12” toes under the 2nd stack down. The hooks are on a spreader bar. The crane man had lowered the spreader bar and hooks down to a position that allowed plenty of slack to safely handle the hooks. The crew was trying to pick up 2 piles but the piles where not stacked even so the crew had to bring the hooks up to another opening. The injured employee stated he had to squat and bend over to place hook in proper opening. All crew members placed their hooks under the stack where 3” x 3” x 36” wood spacers were present creating a safe opening for the hooks.
