Before the incident
While closing the hopper that was used for refractory work on #8 Reheat Furnace the mechanical maintenance tech laborer had the right thumb pinched between the hopper handle and the scrap box. The employee placed the left hand on top of the box and was pulling down. The right gloved hand was placed on the handle. While pulling down with the left hand and using the right hand on handle to support body position the right thumb was pinched between the handle and the box. The investigating team found the handle for the hopper latch is bent and while closing it can create a pinch point between the handle and box. The employee was treated by the EMT and nurse. Employee was sent to Canonsburg Hospital for further treatment. Employee received an open laceration and thumb fracture that required 8 sutures. Employee to follow up with a hand specialist (Dr. [REDACTED]) for further treatment.
