Sharps disposal waste red bag

Patient was requiring the attention of many staff by getting out of bed and trying to leave through walls etc. He was Sun downing. Provider ordered a medication to be given IM. I was helping the patients nurse so i drew up the medication and gave it to the patient. I closed the safety needle using the one handed technique like we were taught but apparently the tip of the needle did not go into the plastic safety sheath. i took the supposedly sheathed needle off of the syringe to discard it in th e sharps and when i put it in the left hand it stuck me in the thumb. I looked down at it and saw that the tip was not down in the plastic sheath all the way. My thumb was bleeding and i squeezed it to bleed more and then washed it with hot water and s oap.
