What happened
C-Shift Supervisor: During upset condition (cobble at No. 13 stand in Finishing mill) Team Member (TM) was raising the coiler turn-down cover to clear out residual copper rod at pinch rolls No.1 & No.2. Coiler turn down is shaped like an arch. The left end of the cover has a handle to raise and open up to access and remove residual copper rod; the cover right side is the pivot point. TM opened the turn-down cover which resulted in tilting the cover back 150 degrees. TM’s right pinky tip was lacerated when he rested his hand between the turn-down cover resting block and the cover in the open position. Injury resulted in 9 sutures. No lost time - no restrictions – OSHA recordable.
