During surgery the employee was assisting the surgeon by exchanging and passing tools used in the procedure between himself and the surgeon. After the surgeon used the [REDACTED] he handed the instrument back to the employee while the employee was reaching forward. This resulted in the sharp end of the instrument hitting the right middle finger dorsal side in the area of the employee 's knuckle causing a sharps injury to that area.
