Before the incident
The Quality Technician was inspecting extruded multilayer tubing in the Quality Lab. She was removing the santoprene outer layer to check the surface finish of the inner plastic layer of the tube. A Klever Kutter t-style safety knife was being used to cut the santoprene away. She was not wearing gloves as Klever Kutters have a well-guarded blade and use of gloves is not required. She was holding the tube in her left hand. While drawing the Klever Kutter down the tube with her right hand the pointed blade guard and or blade of the cutter slipped off the tube and made contact with her left hand. The meaty part of her left palm was lacerated (not significantly deep approximately 1 long). The incident was reported to Supervisor. First Aid was rendered. The employee was taken to the ER for further treatment by Supervisor. 4 stitches were required to close the wound.
