Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupactional Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: a) Employees performed maintenance on shop machinery without utilizing positive lockout procedures, exposing themselves to potential crushing injury. The shop machinery includes, but is not limited to, the band saw, drill press, grinder, core presses, molding machines, and shot blaster. One feasible and acceptable means of abatement is to establish and enforce standard operating procedures to reduce the equipment to a zero state of energy during maintenance activities. This may be accomplished by: 1) Establishing written procedures for performing maintenance on shop equipment.
