General-duty citation text
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the potential release of hydrogen cyanide gas from the stosrage of containers of cyanide-containing chemicals with containers of acids. Exposure to hydrogen cyanide gas, which is produced when cyanide-containing chemicals are mixed with acids, would result in death by asphyxiation or cyanosis: a) QC Lab, on or about 10/24/91. A one-quart plastic container of solution N-25, which contains sodium cyanide, was stored in the same cabinet with several 500 ml glass containers of nitric acid, sulfuric acid, and hydrochloric acid. One feasible and acceptable method of abatement would be to separate the containers of acids from the container of solution N-25 and place them in locations where no potential exists for the two substances to come in contact with one another.
