5(a)(1): Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: the employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees. On the bridge site at Interstate 271 and route 322 in Mayfield Heights, Ohio, two employees securing girders with spud burs working off a pic with no fall protection were exposed to a 21.5 foot fall. A third employee was working off a 16.5 inch steel girder above moving traffic with no fall protection and was exposed to a 21.5 foot fall. Feasible abatement measures may include but are not limited to nets, manlifts, beamwalkers and full-body harnesses and lanyards.
