Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to a recognized hazard of electrical shock or burns:
(a)M/V New West Fisheries:  In the engine room, an extension cord was used
for
permanent wiring.  This condition exposed employees to possible electrical
shock
or burn in the event of accidental contact with bare electrical
conductors.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement to correct this
hazard would be to remove the temporary wiring and install permanent
wiring.
(b)M/V New West Fisheries:  In the engine room is a duplex receptacle with
reversed polarity when tested with Woodhead electrical tester.  This
condition
exposed employees to possible electrical shock or burns.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to
correct
this hazard would be to remove and properly rewire the receptacle.
(c)M/V New West Fisheries:  In the compressor room and the generator room,
the
emergency lighting unit was inoperative.  This condition exposed the
employees
to multiple injuries in the event of evacuation emergency.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to
correct
this hazard would be to replace the emergency lighting units.
