Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to a recognized hazard of electrical shock and burns: (a) M/V New West: Employees working in the engine room had occasion to work with or near three electrical breaker cabinets; box #7, slots 1, 2, and 38; box #8, slot 1; and box #10, top right slot, that had unused openings that were not effectively closed to prevent employee contact with live, bare electrical conductors. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method of abatement would be to install covers over the unused openings.
