Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer
did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious
physical
harm to employees in that employees were exposed to glutaraldehyde in
excess of
the ACGIH ceiling concentration of 0.2 part per million, exposing them to
an
inhalation and skin absorption hazard.
a)Bottling Room: On February 18, 1997 an employee working as a
bottling line operator was exposed to an airborne concentration of
glutaraldehyde of 0.22 PPM, approximately 1.1 times the ceiling
concentration of 0.2 PPM. The total sample was collected for 80
minutes.
b)Bottling Room: On February 19, 1997 an employee working as a
bottling line operator was exposed to airborne concentrations of
glutaraldehyde as follows:
0.27 PPM, approximately 1.35 times the acceptable ceiling
concentration of 0.2 PPM. The total sample was collected for 100
minutes;
0.253 PPM, approximately 1.26 times the acceptable ceiling
concentration of 0.2 PPM. The total sample was collected for 89
minutes;
0.504 PPM, approximately 2.52 times acceptable ceiling concentration
of 0.2 PPM. The total sample was collected for 42 minutes.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to
correct this hazard is to utilize the bottling line scrubber to provide
local exhaust ventilation to the small filler tank and nozzle, and during
the interim, provide respiratory protection.
