Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to glutaraldehyde in excess of the ACGIH ceiling concentration of 0.05 parts per million, exposing them to an inhalation hazard and skin absorption hazard. a. Bottling line on 07/20/2000: An employee working as an inspector was exposed to an airborne concentration of glutaraldehyde of 0.0713 parts per million (PPM) which is approximately 1.4 times the ceiling concentration of 0.05 PPM. The total sample was collected for 15 minutes. b. Bottling line on 07/20/2000: An employee working as an inspector was exposed to an airborne concentration of glutaraldehyde of 0.0964 parts per million (PPM) which is approximately 1.9 times the ceiling concentration of 0.05 PPM. The total sample was collected for 15 minutes. Among other methods, feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct this hazard are to provide local exhaust ventilation at the inspection table and rinse the bottles after they exit out of the filler. Abatement documentation is required for this item. Thatcher Company was previously cited for a violation of this Occupational Safety and Health Standard or its equivalent standard which was contained in Inspection # 300624509, Citation # 1, Item # 1, issued on 06/02/99 and became a final order on 07/01/1999.
