Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to burns, smoke inhalation in the event of a fire or other emergency in not having immediate and unobstructed access through an exit door: Packing Plant, #6, Leeds, Maine - The marked EXIT door located on the West wall of the building in the Cooler Room was locked with a padlock. Abatement Note: Installation of an exit door without locking mechanism, installation of an exit door with a latch or other fastening device that only requires one releasing operation to unfasten/unlock the means of egress, or provide a locking door in which any occupant has immediate availability to a key.
