Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to a crushing hazard created by the sudden and unpredictable
descent of vehicles
elevated by automotive lifts:
a)Maintenance Shop, on or about 5/22/01:  Globe two piston hydraulic
automotive lift had no functional locking devices and there were no
markings
on the lift indicating manufacturer's name, rated load capacity, model and
serial number.  Employees exposed to being struck by the vehicle should the
lift fail.
Among other methods, several feasible and acceptable abatement methods to
correct
these hazards are to:
1.Repair the mechanical locking devices.
2.Install permanent markings on the lift to show the manufacturer's
name,rated load capacity, model and serial number.
3.Establish a periodic inspection procedure as recommended by the
manufacturer to ensure the safe operation of the lift.
4.Instruct all employees in the safe use and operation of the automotive
lifts
and their safety devices and ensure their routine use.
Abatement certification must be submitted for this item.
