Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to:
Employees working with, and / or working in the vicinity of, cranes and
hoists in the shop and
yard areas were exposed to the hazard of being struck by falling chain
slings, or being struck
by loads suspended from cranes and hoists, in that cranes and hoists were
not maintained in a
safe operating condition. Cranes and hoists remained in service with
unsafe conditions including
unlabeled or illegibly labeled pendant control functions, and missing load
hook safety latches.
Among others, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is
to implement a
program of crane and hoist inspection and maintenance that complies with
ANSI B30.11, the
American National Standard for Monorail Systems and Underhung Cranes, and
/ or ANSI
B30.16, the American National Standard for Underhung Hoists, and to repair
or remove from
service cranes and hoists with defects noted during the inspections.
Mound Steel was previously cited for a violation of this Occupational
Safety and Health
standard or its equivalent, Section 5 (a) (1) of the Occupational Safety
and Health Act of
1970, which was contained in OSHA inspection number 305639593, Citation
Number 1,
Item Number 1, issued on 09/02/2002, with respect to a workplace located
at 25 Mound
Park Drive, Springboro Oh.ingboro
