Section 5(a)1 of the Occupational Safety Act of 1970: The employer does not always furnish to each of his employees a place of employment which is free from recognized hazards that are causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the recognized hazard of tipping the CareLift Model ZB6044 rough terrain forklift. Employees were allowed to perform steel working operations while standing on a work platform that was lifted by a rough terrain forklift. The work platform extended a total of fourteen (14) feet beyond the load backrest. a) Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to properly construct the work platform in accordance with Paragraph 8.24.1(b) of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) B56.6-2002, Safety Standards for Rough Terrain Forklift Trucks. DISCLAIMERS: 1) You are not limited to the abatement methods suggested above. 2) The methods explained are general and may not be effective in all cases. 3) The employer is responsible for selecting and carrying out an appropriate method.
