Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which was free from recognized hazards which were likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that, employees were exposed to hazards associated with floor joist collapse due to the placement of loads on un-braced and unsheathed joists: a) On or about March 3, 2006, and at times prior, employees were exposed to falls of 19 feet while preparing to installing floor sheathing. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is to follow the manufacturer installation guidelines including the installation of lateral bracing before allowing employees to walk on the joists, and the installation of sheathing before stacking building materials. Abatement Note: Abatement certification and documentation is required for this item (see enclosed "Sample Abatement-Certification Letter").
