Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish to each of his employees a place of employment which was free from
recognized hazards
that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that
employees were exposed to the recognized hazard of tipping the Gehl Model
RS8 Telehandler
(Rough Terrain Forklift). Employees were allowed to perform steel erection
operations while
standing on a work platform that was lifted by a rough terrain forklift.
The work platform
extended a total of fourteen (14) feet beyond the load backrest.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to
correct
this hazard is to construct and use the work platform in accordance with
Paragraphs 8.24.1(b) and 5-15.1(t) of the American Society of Mechanical
Engineers (ASME) B56.6-2002, Safety Standards for Rough Terrain Forklift
Trucks.
R.K. Wallace Construction Inc dba Wallace Steel Erectors was previously
cited for a violation of this Occupational Safety and Health Standard which
was contained in OSHA Inspection No. 307595165, Citation No. 01, Item No.
001 issued on 09/15/2004, with respect to a workplace located at 4405 Hwy
190 Service Rd, Covington, Louisiana and became a Final Order on
05/31/2005.
