Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish to each of his employees employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or were likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: Employees in the grinding area were exposed to fire and explosion hazards due to explosive aluminum dust and the employer did not ensure that the Type D Roto-Clone Dry Centrifugal Dust Collector was located outside the building. Among other methods, a feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this 1) Eliminate the grinding process 2) Substitute the aluminum for a noncombustible material 3) Relocate the dust collection system to the outside of the building NFPA Standard 484 - 2006 NFPA Standard 484 - 2006 Standard for Combustible Dust, Section 6.3.2.5: "Dry-type dust collectors shall be located outside of buildings" ***Abatement documentation is required for this item in accordance with the requirements of 29 CFR 1903.19(d)***

Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish to each of his employees employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or were likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: Employees in the grinding area were exposed to fire and explosion hazards due to the use of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) exhaust ducting. The ducting carried explosive aluminum dust and the employer did not ensure that the ducts were constructed of conductive material. Among other methods, a feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this 1) Perform a hazard analysis 2) Eliminate the grinding process 3) Substitute the aluminum for a noncombustible metal 4) Replace existing polyvinyl chloride piping with ducts that are fabricated out of conductive material NFPA Standard 484 - 2006 NFPA Standard 484 - 2006 Standard for Combustible Dust, Section 6.3.3.5.1: "Ducts shall be constructed of conductive material and shall be carefully fabricated and assembled with smooth interior surfaces and with internal lap joints facing the direction of airflow" ***Abatement documentation is required for this item in accordance with the requirements of 29 CFR 1903.19(d)***

Among other methods, a feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this 1) Perform a hazard analysis 2) Eliminate the grinding process 3) Substitute the aluminum for a noncombustible metal 4) Equip system with deflagration venting NFPA Standard 484 - 2006 NFPA Standard 484 - 2006 Standard for Combustible Dust, Section 6.3.5.6: "Dry collectors used for combustible aluminum dust shall be provided with deflagration vents. The selection of the type and location of vents or weak sections of the collector shall be designed to minimize injury to personnel and to minimize blast and fire damage to nearby equipment or structures" ***Abatement documentation is required for this item in accordance with the requirements of 29 CFR 1903.19(d)***
