Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to chemical related hazards, while performing production
work:
On or about 07/31/08 at Macon, GA: Employees were exposed to chemical
related hazards,
while performing production work. The employer failed to safely store
chemicals. Incompatible
chemicals were stored in close proximity:
1. Main Production Building Chemical Storage Area: Acetic acid, an organic
acid, was
stored with Nitric Acid and Hydrochloric Acid, which are inorganic acids.
Organic acids shall
not be stored with inorganic acids.
2. Building Number 2: Sodium Hydrosulfite was stored inside Building 2,

next to Nitric
Acid, and Sulfuric Acid. Sodium Hydrosulfite must be stored away from
oxidizers, acids, and
other flammable materials.
AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT
METHOD TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS:
1. The employer should conduct a survey of all storage areas and list the
chemicals stored
within these areas. The employer should review all material safety data
sheets to ensure that
chemicals are stored properly. Storage compatibility should reviewed as
part of this process.
In accordance with 29 CFR 1903.19(d), abatement certification is required
for this violation
(using the CERTIFICATION OF CORRECTIVE ACTION WORKSHEET), and in
addition, documentation demonstrating that abatement is complete must be
included with
your certification. This documentation may include, but is not limited
to, evidence of the
purchase or repair of the equipment, photographic or video evidence of
