Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of exploding plastic compressed air lines:    (a)	Alpine Custom Door & Millwork, Inc., at 2842 Chipeta Ave., Grand Junction, CO 81502:  In the shop area of the facility, the employer was transporting above ground compressed air through schedule 40, 1120 polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipes.  The PVC pipe is used to supply compressed air up to 120 PSI throughout the facility.  This condition exposed the employees to the hazard of being struck by plastic shrapnel if the pipe explodes.    Among other methods, two feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct this hazard are to:    		(1)	Follow American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) Standard D1785-86, which  states polyvinyl chloride (PVC), pipe can be used for transmission of compressed air and gases only if the PVC pipe is made of shatter resistant material or are encased in a shatter resistant material.    		(2)	Replace all existing PVC pipes with a cast iron or other type of metal type piping rated to   transport compressed air safely above ground.    Abatement Note:  Abatement certification and documentation are required for this item (see enclosed Sample Abatement-Certification Letter).

29 CFR 1910.213(c)(1): Circular handfed ripsaw(s) were not guarded by an automatically adjusting hood which completely enclosed that portion of the saw above the table and above the material being cut:    (a)	Alpine Custom Door & Millwork, Inc., at 2842 Chipeta Ave., Grand Junction, CO 81502:  The point of operation on two Delta table saws in the shop, were not guarded at the exposed portion of the blade to prevent employees from having any part of their body in the danger zone during operating cycles.  This condition exposed the employee to the hazard of amputation.    Abatement Note:  To properly guard the saw:    (a)	Each circular hand-fed ripsaw shall be guarded by a hood.    (1)	The hood shall completely enclose that portion of the saw above the table and that   portion of the saw above the material being cut.    (2)	The hood and mounting shall be arranged so that the hood will automatically   adjust itself to the thickness of and remain in contact with the material being cut but it shall not offer any considerable resistance to insertion of material to saw or to passage of the material being sawed.    (3)	The hood shall be made of adequate strength to resist blows and strains incidental   to reasonable operation, adjusting, and handling, and shall be so designed as to protect the operator from flying splinters and broken saw teeth. It shall be made of material that is soft enough so that it will be unlikely to cause tooth breakage.    (4)	The hood shall be so mounted as to insure that its operation will be positive,   reliable, and in true alignment with the saw; and the mounting shall be adequate in strength to resist any reasonable side thrust or other force tending to throw it out of line.

This condition exposed the employees to a kickback hazard.    Abatement Note:  To properly guard the saw:    (a)	The spreader shall:    (1)	The spreader shall be made of hard tempered steel, or its equivalent, and shall be   thinner than the saw kerf.    (2)	The spreader shall be of sufficient width to provide adequate stiffness or rigidity to   resist any reasonable side thrust or blow tending to bend or throw it out of position.    (3)	The spreader shall be attached so that it will remain in true alignment with the   saw even when either the saw or table is tilted.

This condition exposed the employees to a kickback hazard.    Abatement Note:  To properly guard the saw the nonkickback fingers or dogs shall be located as to oppose the thrust or tendency of the saw to pick up the material or to throw it back toward the operator.  They shall be designed to provide adequate holding power for all the thicknesses of materials being cut.
