Employees to include but not limited to surgeons, surgical technicians, phlebotomists, nurses, and nursing assistants are routinely exposed to blood and other potentially infectious materials (OPIM) during work activities. 29 CFR 1910.1030(c)(1)(iv)(B): The review and update of the exposure control plan did not document annually consideration and implementation of appropriate commercially available and effective safer medical devices designed to eliminate or minimize occupational exposure: VA New Jersey Health Care System, 385 Tremont Ave, East Orange, NJ The employer failed to document, on an annual basis, the availability of up to date and effective safer medical devices. Exposure Control Plans dated February 1, 2014 and April 1, 2016 had the identical list of safer medical devices which had not been changed for 2 years. Nurses on the 7th floor use BD Syringe Safety Glide engineered syringe, when retractable syringes are available and also use safety glide or flip type syringes for insulin administration. At the same time, 5th floor nurses are using retractable syringes, which are safer. Violation occurred on or about 10-17-17

Such workers to include but not limited to surgeons, surgical technicians, phlebotomists, nurses, and nursing assistants are exposed to injuries from contaminated sharps on a routine basis.
