29 CFR 1910.1026(c): Employees were exposed to an airborne concentration of chromium (VI) which exceeded 5 micrograms per cubic meter of air, as an 8-hour time-weighted average. On April 20, 2023, two welding shop employees sampled were over hexavalent chromium related health hazards when levels were above the eight-hour time-weighted average (8-hour TWA) permissible exposure limit (PEL) of 5ug of hexavalent chromium per cubic meter of air: 1) Employee #1 performed welding on stainless steel and was exposed to chromium (VI) 2.6 times the PEL. The employee's 8-hour TWA exposure was 13 ug chromium (VI) per cubic meter of air. 2) Employee #2 performed welding on stainless steel and was exposed to chromium (VI) 1.6 times the PEL. The employee's 8-hour TWA exposure was 8 ug chromium (VI) per cubic meter of air. Primus Sterilizer Company Inc was previously cited for a violation of this occupational safety and health standard or its equivalent standard 29 CFR 1910.1026(c), which was contained in OSHA inspection number 1565093, citation number 1, item number 2, group letter a, and was affirmed as a final order on 05/12/2022, with respect to a workplace located at 3707 N Main Street, Great Bend, KS 67530.

29 CFR 1910.1026(f)(1)(i):Feasible engineering controls and work practices were not instituted to reduce and maintain employee exposures to chromium (VI) at or below the permissible exposure limit. Welding shop employees were over permissible exposure limit (PEL) to hexavalent chromium related health hazards when levels sampled were above the eight-hour time-weighted average (8-hour TWA) permissible exposure limit (PEL) of 5ug of hexavalent chromium per cubic meter of air and engineering controls were inadequate to reduce exposure to or below the PEL: 1) Employee #1 performed welding on stainless steel and was exposed to chromium (VI) 2.6 times the PEL. The employee's 8-hour TWA exposure was 13 ug chromium (VI) per cubic meter of air. 2) Employee #2 performed welding on stainless steel and was exposed to chromium (VI) 1.6 times the PEL. On April 20, 2023, two welding shop employees were exposed to hexavalent chromium related health hazards when exposure levels were above the eight-hour time-weighted average (8-hour TWA) permissible exposure limit (PEL) of 5 ug of hexavalent chromium per cubic meter of air and the employer did not conduct monitoring every 3 months: 1) Employee #1 performed welding on stainless steel and was exposed to chromium (VI) 2.6 times the PEL. The employee's 8-hour TWA exposure was 13 ug chromium (VI) per cubic meter of air. 2) Employee #2 performed welding on stainless steel and was exposed to chromium (VI) 1.6 times the PEL. The employee's 8-hour TWA exposure was 8 ug chromium (VI) per cubic meter of air.

29 CFR 1910.1026(j)(2)(ii):The employer did not ensure that high efficiency particulate air-filtered vacuuming or other methods that minimize the likelihood of exposure to chromium (VI) were tried and found not to be an effective cleaning method before allowing dry shoveling, dry sweeping and/or dry brushing. Welding shop employees were exposed to hexavalent chromium related health hazards when dry sweeping the floor. No high efficiency particulate air-filtered vacuuming had been made available for housekeeping purposes.
