What this inspection record means

OSHA opens inspections for many reasons — routine scheduling under a national or local emphasis program, an employee complaint or referral, or a follow-up after a reported injury. 29 CFR 1910.151(c): Where employees were exposed to injurious corrosive materials, suitable facilities for quick drenching or flushing of the eyes and body were not provided within the work area for immediate emergency use. Reference: ANSI Z358.1 Emergency Eyewash and Shower Standard 5.4.2 Reference: The eyewash unit shall be in accessible locations that require no more than 10 seconds to reach, located on the same level as the hazard, and the path of travel shall be free of obstructions that may inhibit the immediate use of the equipment. Bldg. 797, Auto Care Center: On or about April 2, 2025 and at times prior thereto, employee(s) handled corrosive batteries while conducting battery replacement/changeout per requests of customers. The car care facility had two vehicle bays and the bay closest to the eyewash station was used for storage and in turn blocked the eyewash station. The employer did not ensure employee(s) had immediate accesses to the eyewash station without having to navigate around obstructions in the bay used for storage. An eyewash for quick drenching and/or flushing of eyes for 15 minutes was necessary due to the potential of unexpected exposure to battery acid used at the care facility. This condition potentially exposed employee(s) to eye irritation, corneal abrasion, and/or serious eye damage.
