An employee was using a chipping hammer to remove asphalt from around a manhole cover. The hammer got stuck and an excavator operator attempted to remove the hammer using an excavator bucket. The employee reached down to help when the hammer engaged, causing the bucket to jump and pin the employee's left ring finger between the bucket tooth and the hammer. The employee suffered a fingertip amputation.
