installing a check valve to assist with acid dosing in line

Employee working in wastewater treatment disconnecting a line of diluted sodium hydroxide and water to install a check valve as the CPO 's were having difficulty reducing the pH of the DI Regen tank. Employee isolated the acid pump and closed the valve so that no acids would come thru the line when conducting the work. When he disconnected the joint the remaining mix of chemical from the upper line came rushing thru out of the removed joint and sprayed across his upper body and face. Employee was wearing face shield and safety glasses when the spray happened. The employee was working above the connection and the trajectory of the spray went under his face mask (see re-creation picture). Employee rinsed his face and body in the eyewash station and shower to remove the chemicals from his face and body - initial washing approximately 5 minutes but continued to wash his eyes several times with water and saline. Employee was transported to hospital for further aid. ER irrigated his eyes for
