Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to a fall hazard: Employee(s) were exposed to a fall hazard of approximately 18 feet while being raised and/or lowered by a Gehl lift #833 located inside the building. Employee(s) were securing (choking) welding machines to building structural members by standing on a wood pallet that was being raised and lowered by the forks on the Gehl lift. Employees were not protected from the fall hazard through the use of standard railing or the equivalent nor was the pallet secured to the lifting carriage and/or forks. One feasible and acceptable abatement method, among others, to correct this hazard is to provide a safety platform with standard railing and toeboards firmly secured to the lifting carriage and/or forks.
